PART 1: APPRECIATING BRITAIN’S HILLS AND MOUNTAINS: LANDSCAPES OF MEANING AND SIGNIFICANCE
This short online MTA session forms part of a free series of informative and interactive webinars designed to help provide continued support for members during the current lockdown.
MTA members who work in Britain’s hills and mountains enjoy landscapes of great social meaning and significance. This is often reflected in enigmatic place names and the naming of plants and animals that reveal ancient associations with the natural environment. An ability to tell the stories contained within the names given to places and features by our ancestors can help our clients further understand and appreciate the significant of our hills and mountains.
This series of MTA webinar sessions aim to help MTA members develop their interest and abilities in the interpretation of hill and mountain landscapes through the naming of places and features.
Part 1 (this session) provides a review of the background this fascinating area of landscape appreciation, outline some of the origins of the way that people have embedded meaning into the landscape through naming since prehistoric times.
Part 2 (13th May) will look in more detail at naming conventions used for hill and mountain landscapes within different parts of Britain. This session will provide guidance on key sources of information for those who would like to develop their interest further.
