About

About Leader's landscape training:

Landscape is our support system without which we could not exist.

Everyone depends on landscape for food, water, fuel and clean air.

A beautiful and diverse landscape with a wealth of wildlife and human history inspires and enriches our lives and provides a ‘natural health service’ for mind and body. But our fragile landscapes are under threat as never before, not least from climate change, and our challenge is to understand, support and enhance them.

Leader’s Landscape Training is aimed at outdoor practitioners to help deepen your understanding of Cumbria’s landscapes and enable you to pass on your new-found knowledge to those with whom you work.

Workshop detail:

The Lake District National Park is renowned for its dramatic scenery, with the highest mountains and deepest lakes enticing visitors from across the globe. For those who enjoy this landscape, there is an element of the Cumbrian countryside that is often left overlooked…and these are Cumbria’s rainforests.

Within Britain, our temperate rainforests are more commonly known as Atlantic woodlands, and are one of the richest and most treasured habitats found within the UK. These ecosystems are teeming with biodiversity and showcase some of the most exceptional lifeforms within the British Isles.

Join April Windle, a lichen enthusiast who has worked extensively in Cumbria, to experience, appreciate and fully immerse yourself in some of the finest rainforest habitats the British Isles has to offer. Bring your waterproofs folks, we are heading to the wettest place in England …Borrowdale.

This session will introduce you to Atlantic woodlands and the lichens and bryophytes that characterise Cumbria’s rainforests, focusing on their importance, fragility and conservation going forward.

Walk grade: Moderate (possibly strenuous for some). The terrain will be uneven under foot and this walk will stray away from footpaths.

Meeting point:

Seatoller National Trust Car Park, Seatoller, Borrowdale, CA12 5XN (NY245137) www.nationaltrust.org.uk/borrowdale-and-derwent-water/features/seatoller-car-park
