Introduction to GPS
An introduction to GPS for outdoor navigators and leaders who have a limited experience of using a GPS device to navigate. This course is tailored for IMLs and focuses on the 5 core GPS skills: Setup & Operation, Location, Waypoints, Basic Navigation, and Track Back.
Over the past 2 years, GPS technology has rapidly advanced, and walkers, hikers and mountaineers enjoy far greater capability and potential compared to motorists’ satnavs. This all-new course both informs and demonstrates to participants the capabilities of the latest devices and gives the opportunities to learn and consolidate core GPS skills.
Equipment
Appropriate outdoor clothing and kit for a day out on the hill including a packed meal. If you own a GPS device, or use a smart-device mapping app, bring this along fully charged or with fresh batteries. However, a GPS device will be provided for all course members to practice the core skills.
Provider info
Rick Shearer is the BAIML GPS Jedi having both extensively used GPS devices to lead and navigate worldwide and delivered training to fellow IMLs and other professionals over the past 15 years.
