First Aid and Human Factors for IMLs

The day will cover two areas of CPD:

- Refreshing some key outdoor first aid skills

- Exploring human factors including mental health challenges that can occur when leading groups.


NB: This CPD day is not a replacement for a first aid qualification or minimum 16 hour requirement.

Programme for the day:

1) First aid skills – practical focus:
- DR (C)ABCDE approach
- CPR in an adult, including use of a defibrillator
- Recovery position
- Chest pain
- Asthma
- Diabetes
- Taping a sprained ankle
- Allergy and use of epipen (if time)

2) Exploration of human factors that can affect the smooth running of IML-led activities from single day outings to remote expeditions:
- Revisit heuristic traps and how these can impact decision making.
- Mental health issues on expedition and the Emotional Kit List.
- Discussion drawing on the lived experiences of the group, with peer-sharing of knowledge and leadership strategies to manage different situations. Attendees will be expected to come prepared to discuss a situation that they have experienced.

Examples of situations for discussion could include:
- One group member significantly less / more experienced or fit than the others.
- Disruptive group member e.g. alcohol or drug related.
- Challenging relationship between group members: either hostile e.g. racist, homophobic, etc; or overly amorous.
- Undeclared physical health issue or pregnancy

The aim will be to conduct all sessions outside as much as possible, weather permitting.

 

Please bring:

- Waterproof outdoor gear (jacket and trousers)
- Outdoor shoes
- Weather dependent: warm layers including gloves and hat / T-shirt, shorts and sunhat
- Sunnies, sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Packed lunch
- Wallet
- Notebook and pencil / device to take notes
- Something to sit on 

Parking at the Salle des Fêtes in Servoz is limited (but free). Please use public transport or car share if possible. The venue is within
easy walking distance from the Servoz train station. We recommend you bring lunch, although there is a shop and boulangerie nearby (with limited opening hours).

The workshop will be delivered by Dr Lucy Sykes of Endeavour Medical.

Lucy has been a consultant stroke physician since 2013, currently working in the departments of Stroke Medicine and Elderly Care at
Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust.  She was Clinical Lead for Stroke 2015-2018, and Clinical Director for Specialty Medicine 2017-2020
including playing a lead role in the Trust response to the coronavirus pandemic.  Lucy believes in education and empowerment to develop individuals and teams, thereby promoting the provision of excellent evidence-based healthcare. Since 2011 Lucy has been a part of Wessex-Ghana-Gambia Stroke Partnership, supporting the development of stroke services to improve patient care at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra.  The partnership facilitated the opening of the first dedicated stroke unit in West Africa and now focusses on disseminating skills and knowledge both nationally and internationally. WGSP is currently developing a new partnership with the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul, The Gambia.

As a keen mountaineer, runner and outdoor enthusiast Lucy believes that greater potential can be achieved through connecting with nature, appreciating and redefining capability through adventure. She is trained in wilderness and expedition medicine, and is an aspirant Mountain Leader.

The workshop price is 40 EUR for BAIML members and 65 EUR for non-members. Bookings are binding and cancellation or no-show is charged at the full cost unless your space can be taken by another.

Once the workshop has been completed, please allow two weeks for CMS to be updated to reflect your attendance. This will be done automatically so you do not need to add the CPD yourself. Please bring your MT registration number with you to the workshop for the attendance form.
