GPS Skills for International Mountain Leaders (full day session)
A hands-on, very practical GPS skills workshop for those wanting to develop their own skills and understanding of this fast-moving
technology, and for those who want to get to grips with the implications of GPS for the outdoor professional.
The course will cover:
- GPS fundamentals (how it works).
- Current GPS devices and technology (handheld, smartphone and wearables).
- Essential GPS skills for outdoor navigators (location and more).
- Digital maps and how they differ to paper maps.
- Basic point-to-point navigation using a GPS device.
- Implications of GPS for leaders and professionals.
Equipment needed
Please bring suitable outdoor kit for hill walking in the Peak District. A GPS handheld is provided for each course member for the duration of the course but bring your smartphone and any GPS handheld or wearable that you currently use.
Provider details
The workshop will be delivered by Rick Shearer who has trained more than 350 outdoor leaders and professionals to use a GPS
device over the past 10 years. Rick is a recently retired International Mountain Leader and a member of his local MRT.
Please note that the workshop will be held at the Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre adjacent to the Buxton Country Park. It is situated on the outskirts of Buxton,giving direct access to the surrounding hills, and is about a mile’s walking distance from the Palace Hotel (allow 25 minutes).
