GPS Navigation for International Mountain Leaders (full day session)
This workshop is a follow-on GPS navigation workshop for those who have attended an earlier skills course, or already have sound basic skills, and want to take them to the next stage of using the device to navigate in any terrain, in any conditions, anywhere.
The course will cover:
- Revision and practice of some GPS fundamentals and core skills.
- Navigation technology packed into current handhelds, smartphones and wearables.
- Digital maps and their underpinning navigation networks.
- Advanced navigation using a GPS device (direct, ad-hoc, key-point, mini-route and active / snap-to-path variations).
- Practical advice for using a GPS device.
Equipment needed
Please bring suitable outdoor kit for hill walking in the Peak District. A GPS handheld is provided for each course member for the duration of the course but bring your smartphone and any GPS handheld or wearable that you currently use.
Provider details
The workshop will be delivered by Rick Shearer who has trained more than 350 outdoor leaders and professionals to use a GPS
device over the past 10 years. Rick is a recently retired International Mountain Leader and a member of his local MRT.
Please note that the workshop will be held at the Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre adjacent to the Buxton Country Park. It is situated on the outskirts of Buxton,giving direct access to the surrounding hills, and is about a mile’s walking distance from the Palace Hotel (allow 25 minutes).
