Environmental Sustainability and the International Mountain Leader (full day session)

A brief introduction to geology will lead into a more detailed description of the formation and weathering of calcareous rocks, the different types of karstic landforms this produces and their evolution in upland karstic terranes, especially the White Peak of central Derbyshire.  A proper understanding of the natural world requires a degree of familiarity with geology.  IMLs are uniquely placed to nurture and rekindle this amongst their clients.    

Equipment needed

Nil for indoors, but appropriate outdoor walking equipment/attire for the possible field excursion. Participants are welcome to bring any unusual rock samples they may possess to the indoor session!

Provider details

This workshop will be delivered by Dan Hamer. Dan has more than 40 years of experience as a field geologist.  He began his career with the British Antarctic Survey, worked briefly as an academic research geologist on Andean volcanoes before joining the international mining and mineral exploration industry in Africa, Australasia and the Middle East.  He specialises in the exploration for, and delineation of, gold and copper resources.  He is a Chartered Geologist, a Fellow of both the Geological Society and the Royal Geographical Society and has been a member of the Yorkshire Geological Society since 1971.  He grew up in a rock climbing family and has spent much of his non-working life mountaineering in the UK, Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australasia.  He has been an active member of the Fell & Rock since 1973 and qualified as an IML in 2005.  Two of his sons (Sam & Ed Hamer) are professional rock climbers.

Dan and his wife Denise currently reside in the village of Over Haddon above Lathkildale in the White Peak.
