The workshop will cover the geology of the Mendip Hills by looking at rock exposures and features in Burrington Combe, Blackdown, Velvet Bottom and Cheddar Gorge. The features exposed give an insight into 300 million years of Earth history as this part of the Earth’s surface moved from south of the equator and was shaped through deposition in tropical seas, mountain building, erosion in a desert environment and after the most recent ice age. We will look at how cave systems form in limestone scenery and how the minerals and other resources have been exploited.  Walking about 12 km across the top of the Mendips to Cheddar gives an opportunity to appreciate the relationship between the underlying geology and vegetation and the ecological pressures on the natural world. A plan to enable participants to get back to the start in Burrington Combe has been worked out!

Please bring the usual kit for a day outside in autumn. Bring a packed lunch and beverages. A head torch and climbing helmet will be useful as will a pen and paper. If you have one clinometer (phone app is fine) bring that along also.

The workshop will be delivered by John Kirby who became an IML in 2013. John has a keen interest in Geology which he studied with
the Open University and he is a Fellow of the Geological Society and a member of the Somerset Geology Group an involved in 
surveying  sites of geological interest in Somerset.
