Award Description
This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required for instruction of mountaineering, both summer and winter, including snow, ice and rock climbing. It builds on the skills acquired in both the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, and Winter Mountain Leader qualifications; both of which candidates must hold to access the scheme. The Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor is an extensively used professional qualification.
This qualification was previously called the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate (MIC).
You want to instruct mountaineering and climbing skills in winter conditions in the UK and Ireland. This five day training course covers all the essential aspects of the syllabus for the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Scheme.
You'll learn from the top specialists in their field to reach your goal. You'll gain many new climbing and mountaineering skills, develop your judgement, and gain an understanding of the standard of the qualification.You'll cover topics such as; snowpack evaluation, short roping, personal movement, route choice and teaching strategies. The day's practical activities out in the mountains are supplemented by evening lectures and activities to enhance your knowledge.
This course will be delivered from our scenic winter base in Scotland, the Alltshellach hotel in North Ballachulish, just 12 miles from Fort William. Run by Plas y Brenin with some of the UK's most experienced and knowledgable instructors.
