Sunday 23rd April 2023 - FULL DAY
Leadership, teaching and learning for AMI members
Workshop Content
Mountain Training have recently updated the walking qualification syllabuses. They have improved the section on leadership and added a section on teaching and learning skills. This workshop is aimed at those who might be working on courses with these topics to cover. The aim is to get under the skin of the changes and see how they look and feel ‘on the hill’.
We’ll start with an indoor session brainstorming the characteristics of good leadership. We’ll then get out on walk to translate these into leadership behaviours. Armed with this experience we’ll visit some theoretical models of leadership including the INSPIRE model as used by Mountain Training. All this will then be related to the walking qualification syllabi and how leadership might be demonstrated, trained and assessed ‘on the hill’.
We’ll then reflect on the teaching and learning throughout the day and relate how the day went in terms of good teaching and learning practice. I’ll provide a condensed model that works in the outdoor setting as well as in classrooms.
Attendees will leave the workshop with two action plans one based on leadership suited to their own needs and one based on improving their own teaching practice.
The workshop will be classroom based with a walk of around a couple of hours leading up to lunch. You will need your packed lunch drinks and be equipped to go for a walk in the prevailing conditions.
