WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES
During this one-day workshop we will explore the geology of Camasunary Bay as an example of the rocks and geological processes which produced Skye and the surrounding areas of the North Atlantic Igneous Province. If you have every wondered why Scotland's mouyntains are not as high as related Caledonian mountains of teh Appalachians and Norway, or why the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods are so poorly represented in Scotland but so abundant elsewhere in the UK and Europe - this is for you. Understanding the large-scale geological processes which gave rise to the volcanic rocks of Skye is key to unlocking the last 200 million years of Scotland's geological history.
By the end of the day you should have an understanding of:
-The plate tectonic and geological context of the Cuillin and related volcanic centres.
-How changes in relative sea-level can be brought about and what they do for deposition and erosion in the lansdacape.
-The formation of the North Sea, the Minch, and their relation to the North Atlantic.
-Plume-style volcanism and why theh Cuillin are geologically more a part of Iceland than mainland Scotland.
-Britain's igneous rocks.
-How to read the rocks to understand the relative timings of geological processes.
