WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES
During this one-day workshop we will explore the geology of Coire Lair and Beinn Liath Mhor as an introduction to the rocks of Torridon and the Moine Thrust Zone. Tectonic plate boundaries are normally complex zones where a lot of plate motion (sometimes ammounting to many hundreds of kilometers of slip) has been accommodates across quite narrow zones only a few kilometres wide. The Moine thrust zone is one exampe of this, where plate convergence during the closure of teh Iapetus Ocean, cluminating in the Caledonian mountain building event. Around Coire Lair there is clear evidence of the repeated stacking of Torridonian and Cambrian age rocks as a series of thrust sheets, mbetween the main Moine and Kisshorn Thrusts and showing the development of Nappe systems in miniature. As well as classic deformational features, the Torridonin rocks show sedimentary features which allow us to reconstruct their depositional environment to give a view of the billion-year old desert in which they formed.
By the end of the day you should have an understanding of:
-The plate tectonic and geological context of the Moine thrust.
-The causes of strain locallisation and faulting.
-How major faults propagate along damage zones.
-The depositional environments of the Torridon sandstone and Cambrial quartzite and their sedimentary structures.
