Introduction
The Ilkley Cow & Calf CPD Day is aimed at RCI Trainees, newly qualified and qualified instructors who are interested in developing rigging and selection of routes. Ilkley Cow & Calf lends itself well to several group abseils and climbs, and therefore opportunities to explore anchors and issues related to venues.
Syllabus
Anchors – explore as a group a 3-anchor system in the quarry with equalisation. Look at the pros and cons of the systems and the equipment that each have used and created. Using different means by which to equalise two anchors before equalising with the third anchor. Skills reviewed included:
- W-system vs V-system
- Bowlines, overhands, alpine butterflies and bunny-ears
- Isolation loops
- Use of additional equipment, i.e. rope-only and slings.
- Gear placement
- Climbs – Selecting relevant climbs for a group, and the benefits of visiting a crag beforehand as a climber. The routes selected and rigged by each group have problem-solving issues related to them. Routes may include:
- Rope cinching by cracks
- Swings/Pendulums
- Sloping edges and anchor abrasion
John Rocks, RCDI and ML
An outdoor instructor since 2003, and qualified as an RCI in 2006. I have assisted on several SPA (now RCI training courses), CWI and CWDI as well. This experience has lent itself well to supporting instructors and trainees in developing a greater awareness of common mistakes and issues, and how to mitigate or minimise the risk from becoming a reality.
