Award Description

This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to lead hillwalking groups in summer conditions on mountainous routes not requiring the planned use of a rope. Established in 1964, this was the first qualification created by Mountain Training.

Evening

 

Day 1

 

Introductions, Summer ML scheme and log books. Remit and role of an ML, equipment for a leader to carry for a day walk. Introduction to navigation.

Mountain Weather.

Models of leadership and leadership styles.

Day 2

Mountain day including discussion on leadership styles and management of groups, including on discrete hazards and steep ground.

Introducing ropes, their context within the ML scheme and relevant knots.

Day 3

Emergency rope work including anchor selection and rope systems for safeguarding group members and leaders in ascent and descent.

Access rules and other legislation pertinent to a mountain leader.

Day 4

Dealing with emergencies and rescues including improvised carries and mountain rescue services. Water hazards and stream crossings.

Route planning session and packing for expedition.

Day 5

 

 

Expedition focusing on navigation, leadership, the environment and camp craft.

Night navigation.

Day 6

 

 

 

Return from expedition and clean up.  Discussion on action plan between training and assessment.  Group and individual debriefs.

Course close 5pm.
