WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

Anchors – explore as a group a 3-anchor system with equalisation. Look at the pros and cons of the systems and the equipment that each have used and created. Using different means by which to equalise two anchors before equalising with the third anchor. Skills reviewed

included:

- W-system

- Bowlines, overhands, alpine butterflies and bunny-ears

- Isolation loops

- Use of additional equipment, i.e. rope-only and slings.

- Gear placement

Climbs – Selecting relevant climbs for a group, and the benefits of visiting a crag beforehand as a climber. The routes selected and rigged by each group have problem-solving issues related to them. Routes may include:

- Rope cinching by cracks

- Swings/Pendulums

- Sloping edges and anchor abrasion

Abseils – There isn't a massive abundance of abseils in the Peak, that is great to visit issues related to each, both from a rigging and personal safeguarding point of view, but also group management.

- Choosing abseils related to group ability, consider progression

- Spotters/Assistants at the bottom

- Considerations of high vs low anchors

- Stretch in long anchors and the effect on the abseiler

Learning Outcomes - To spot common issues related to the above setups and how to incorporate a number of small corrections to rigging to avoid damage to equipment, pendulums and other common issues on single pitch venues.

TRANSPORT

There is plenty of free parking available in the car park, however parking fees have now been implemented in many of the car parks. When in Hathersage we can discuss this and minimise/share these costs where possible with car share.

With regards to public transport, there are buses and trains available, from Sheffield and Manchester to Hathersage. Timetables are available online, please use Google Maps with caution as they don't consider all bus services and connection possibilities, and sometimes the timings are out of date.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Personal climbing equipment, i.e. harness, helmet, belay. If you have group equipment then please do bring this along with you. We will be splitting in to smaller groups, so equipment can be shared, and if not we will also bring along additional equipment for folk to borrow as well.

Additional equipment includes:

- Static and dynamic rope

- Rack of gear and rope protectors

- Lanyard (i.e. Petzl, Kong, etc.)

CATERING/FOOD

Please bring with you a packed lunch, snacks and a drink. There are a couple of shops in Hathersage, but please ensure any purchases of lunch and snacks are made prior to the course.

WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS

John is a qualified RCDI with experience extensive experience at many crags across the UK as an RCI. He has worked on a number of RCI training courses as support staff and various indoor training and assessment courses. John presently runs his own company in Yorkshire running courses from indoor and outdoor climbing clubs, holiday sessions and also Rock Skills Introduction and Intermediate courses. John has been an active RCI since 2006, and is constantly working hard to make climbing as fun and engaging as possible.
