Certified by the Royal Geographical Society, the RGS Off-Site Safety Management (OSSM) course was designed in response to concerns about safety in off-site activities. It addresses the context of legislation in this area and provides an opportunity for attendees to explore the practical application of the legislation in practical situations. The course includes BS8848 -2014 overview for Adventure Safety Programming and Learning Outside the Classroom contexts.
Therefore, the course is a must for those involved in planned visits in the UK or overseas.
 
Certificated by the RGS, it is spread over two
days, and offers an in-depth look at the safety management issues involved in planning, managing and evaluating local visits, field-trips, residentials, expeditions and exchanges. It aims to equip attendees with the ability to apply knowledge, understanding and problem solving skills in a range of contexts.
Please bring outdoor clothing suitable for outdoor session, packed lunch, pen and paper.
The workshop will primarily be run indoors followed by outdoor sessions. Fresh drinking water will be available along with tea, coffee, biscuits and snacks. Note book/pen will also be useful. Full course notes will be available.
 
The workshop will be delivered by Matt Brown who is an IML, adventurer and experienced independent consultant/trainer with 30 years of professional social worker practice and outdoor freelance experience. Matt currently runs Bluestone Outdoors, a small outdoor training, guiding and expedition service. He has been leading and working on expeditions worldwide since the 1980’s. He currently works with a number of Leadership and Performance Consulting businesses across the UK. Matt has led expeditions to 5 of the 7 Worlds Continents, which included: Madagascar, Argentina, Malaysia, Borneo (jungle trekking), Eswatini, Costa Rica, Morocco x 3, India Himalaya and China, which have involved high altitude trekking up to 5300m. On a personal note, Matt has also travelled extensively throughout the World’s mountain/desert regions, completing trekking peaks (at altitudes in excess of 6000m e.g. Mera and Island Peak) and explored the Canadian wilderness on research expeditions unsuccessfully avoiding bears! He has also travelled widely throughout most of Europe, including alpine ascents. He embarked on a successful unsupported Artic Expedition during winter 2023.
 
Professional qualifications – Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work (Oxon); Post Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Management (Oxon); International Mountain Leader.
