This is a mostly practical workshop that focuses on the ‘what to teach’ aspect of coaching climbing, looking at specific climbing movements and techniques. This forms part of the Mountain Training coaching pathway but is also attended by aspiring climbers looking to develop their own personal skills.

Attendees for this workshop include:

• Aspiring coaches
• Youth group leaders
• Climbers for personal development
• Parents of children who climb
• Climbing wall staff

Subjects we will cover in detail:

• Base of support
• Resting
• Flagging
• Twisting on steep ground
• Opposing forces

Additional content:

We will explore Fundamental Movement Skills with a selection of fun activities and highlight common climbing errors to learn from.

You'll have plenty of opportunities to take part in games and more formal coaching scenarios which will help to deepen your understanding, and, in turn, make climbing and coaching easier.

We'll also discuss the needs of young climbers, looking at the key points of youth development and best practices for avoiding injuries.

This workshop is resourced, and you will receive supporting documentation to help you as you consolidate.

What to pack:

• Pen & paper and/or laptop/tablet
• Climbing shoes and chalk (available for hire from the centre if needed)
• There is a café on site. You are also welcome to bring a packed lunch to eat in the café.
• Warm clothes for classroom-based times
