About

This course is designed to equip candidates with the skills to work as a Rock Guide in the UK and will build on the skills introduced during the previous Rock Entrance Exam and Foundation Course. Any feedback given is to help you progress towards the level required for Rock 2 and the assessment at a later date.

We require a collaborative approach towards your personal safety and those of your climbing group throughout. It’s therefore imperative to be operating with a clear minded approach to your judgements and actions at all times during the course. Please arrive with plenty of recent mileage trad climbing!

This training course will endeavour to cover all aspects of UK Summer guiding skills. The course dates will allow us a little flexibility with weather and conditions in that there’s a spare day to allow for optimising with what happens. There will be 4 days training out of the possible 5.

Ideally it will play out like this...

The evening before - time TBA. Course introductions, safety reminder and look at the weather for the days ahead to plan the order of these following days.

Day 1 - A foundation in Short Roping.

Day 2 - Further development of short roping skills on a mountain day.

Day 3 – Guided climbing day on multi pitch classics and safeguarding complicated descents.

Day 4 – Progressive teaching and coaching of traditional rock climbing skills from novice to beginner leader.

You should be equipped with the following for the course...

Ability and confidence to efficiently climb at least E1 for the duration as well as dealing with strenuous mountain days (and a sense of humour/adventure).

Full climbing rack and personal safety gear to operate on adventurous multi pitch mountain crags and sea cliffs. This should include helmet, locking carabiners, 3 x prussik loops, belay plate suitable for “guide mode” direct belaying for 2 x simultaneous seconds and extenders to allow for leading complicated pitches on a single rope.

Each candidate should also have their own single or triple rated rope as a minimum. A matched pair would be ideal. If possible bring a spare abseil rope suitable for somewhere like the Gogarth sea cliffs ( ie low stretch and 60m + ).

First aid kit, small group shelter and mobile phone.

Personal mountaineering gear to include mountain boots (suitable for general mountaineering and climbing up to VS standard), 1:25000 map of N Snowdonia, compass, headlamp, light leather palmed gloves suitable for short roping and waterproofs (just in case).

Ideally you should have a number of climbing and scrambling guidebooks to the area. If not I would recommend the following for their accuracy and classic content...

North Wales Rock by Simon Panton/Ground Up Publications.

Rock Climbing in Snowdonia by Paul Williams.

North Wales Scrambles by Gary Smith.

If you’re an occasional visitor you’re welcome to borrow guidebooks for the course until you find the format that you like to use for the summer ahead. In preparation (as well as an essential guiding skill) an accurate knowledge of the climbing history and environment of Snowdonia’s mountain crags and sea cliffs should be developed.

This is all a very brief outline of the course at this stage.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
