About

The environment for LL and HML trainees

Where: Surprise View Car Park (link) SK25155 80099

When: 28/04/2024 9am - 1.30pm

This is a new event from the Peak Region Team which aims to give participants the knowledge and resources needed to ace the environment section of the Lowland Leader and Hill and Moorland Leaders awards.

This moderate walk will cover a variety of different terrains and features, allowing us to share knowledge on a variety of different topics. This is a peer led event so please come ready to share what you know - whether that’s very little or alot!

What you’ll learn

  • Knowledge of the lowland and moorland environment, including aspects of geology, history, flora, and fauna.

  • How to use this information when you’re leading.

  • How to identify flora and fauna that is new to you.

  • Information on other resources you can use to further your learning.

  • If you’d like to practice your flora and fauna talk ahead of your assessment there will also be the opportunity to do so - however this won’t be a requirement.

This workshop is aimed at those working towards the LL and HML awards but may also be of interest to newly qualified leaders. If you feel you are qualified and would like to come along and share what you know, please send an enquiry to the organiser, rather than booking a place.

We estimate the event will end at 1.30pm however that will depend on how much we see and stop to chat about!

Equipment needed

A curious mind and willingness to learn and share knowledge. Come prepared for a day out on the moors, including food and drink. You’ll need personal walking kit appropriate for the forecasted weather conditions and rough ground conditions. Please also bring a personal first aid kit, any medication you may need and your mobile phone. As this is a peer-led event you are  for your own safety and well-being. If you have any medical conditions which might affect you during the workshop, you should notify the leaders.

Though navigation won’t be the focus of the day, please feel free to bring a map if you’d like to note where we are. You’ll need both OS Explore OL1 and OL24 for the area we’re walking.
