Award Description

Our Rock Skills courses are designed to provide structured training opportunities for people who want to learn more and become independent climbers. There are three different levels so that complete beginners and those with more experience can choose the most appropriate starting point. 

Mountain Training Rock Skills courses provide a progressive introduction to the basic skills and techniques of rock climbing outdoors, which will help you stay safe, enjoy climbing to the full and provide the foundations required for participation and development of your own rock climbing activities. Your Rock Skills tutor will introduce you to the key technical skills in a progressive and well-structured format and provide you with safely managed opportunities to try them out at the crag

Is this course for me?

This course is your key to getting started! No previous experience of climbing is required to attend a Rock Skills Introduction course because the content of the course is aimed at complete beginners. If you do have some experience of climbing but aren’t confident about using the equipment required, finding the crags, locating the routes you want to do and how to stay safe on the crag then a Rock Skills Introduction course is an ideal way to learn

Before the course: 

You must register with miuntain training for the rock skills scheme before you can be accepted onto this course. Registration is FREE. 

If you are under 18 you will need an adult to register and create a D-Log profile on mountain trainings website in their name and then add you as a child on their profile. Once this is done they can then register you for the shceme. 

What does the Rock Skills Introduction course cover?

Background and Planning.

An awareness of the types of places you can climb in the UK and Ireland, how to use guidebooks and mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette and the work of the mountaineering councils.

Climbing Skills.

Fundamental movement skills and climbing styles.

Footwear and Equipment.

Footwear and equipment selection and how to use the kit you choose.

Technical Skills.

Tying into a harness, belaying, spotting and how to abseil.

Environmental Knowledge.

The impact of climbers at the crag, ethics, access and environmental considerations for climbers.

Hazards and Emergency Procedures.

Identifying hazards, managing risk, understanding common injuries, how to get help and the role of Mountain Rescue and associated emergency services.

What does the day look like?

The course will start at the Rock UK Summit Centre at 09:30 am. Chance for a quick coffee and a chat about the day before we sort out equipment (all provided) and then head to one of the many local climbing venues in the Rock UK minibus for the day.

Bring a packed lunch, drink and any clothing appropriate to the weather conditions. Waterproofs can be borrowed from Summit Centre.

We will spend the day climbing and learning the ropes before heading back to the centre to pack up and debrief by 5:30 pm.

What’s next?

Progression after this course could involve gaining further climbing experience with friends or through a climbing club.

At Rock UK Summit Centre we offer a youth climbing pathway with weekly climbing clubs available from ages 4 – 18 and adult learn to climb courses, coaching sessions and climbing socials. 

A Rock Skills Intermediate course is the next step in the Rock Skills pathway.
