Award Description
This qualification is designed to enable coaches to be more effective in coaching the fundamental movement skills of climbing. Foundation Coaches will usually be concerned with the stimulating delivery of a single session to a group of individuals.
This course will provide you with a whole host of information and importantly, will provide structure to support you as you develop your coaching expertise.
The course will start off with an example of effective coaching and throughout the day we will focus on the component parts of a good coaching session.
The coaching scheme is principally about learning 'how' to get information across. Effective coaches employ a range of strategies to accelerate the progress of their groups/climbers.
The coaching behaviours that we will explore, are aimed at beginners but apply whoever you are coaching. The practical content of the course is also aimed at beginners and we will practice coaching techniques that beginners most often need to learn: footwork, use of handholds, weight transfer, climbing in steeper terrain etc.
This course is mainly practical but we will spend time in the classroom exploring each of the coaching components before trying them practically.
Having a secure understanding of the technical aspects of climbing and some coaching/instructing experience is not essential prior to the course but will make it much easier for you.
This course is resourced and you will receive templates and supporting documentation to help you as you consolidate.
You will need climbing shoes and a pen/paper and may need a harness/belay device if at a roped centre.
