Award Description

This scheme is delivered on the island of Ireland ONLY. The Mountain Skills (MS) training course provides a general introduction to hillwalking in Ireland and the fundamentals of mountain navigation. Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency, Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, day and night navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course may be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills. Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader (ML). Mountain Skills courses are available throughout Ireland.

About

The Mountain Skills (MS) training course provides the essential personal proficiency skills you will need to enjoy the mountains in the UK & Ireland safely. This course is Mountain Skills 2- during which the basic foundations of map reading and navigation are refreshed and navigation using a compass is taught and practiced.

This a follow up 2 day course. Mountain Skills 2 builds on Mountain Skills 1 to look at the use of the compass in more detail and to challenge your new skills by using them at night. I only run Mountain Skills 2 in late autumn through to Spring as otherwise you have to be up really late before it gets dark! Eventbrite will show as finishing at 5pm but the finish time on the Saturday will be closer to 8pm in order to fit in a couple of hours of night navigation afer sunset at around 4:30pm. The second day is usually a little shorter to allow for the longer first day and we can be flexible about the start time dependent on if people need to travel so that you are adequately rested.

Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency, Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course may be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills.

Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader (ML).

I will provide maps and compasses to all participants for use on the course.

Event start location will be updated closer to the start of the course and dependent on weather conditions but is likley to be in Newcastle or Meelmore Lodge.

REFUNDS: There is a Mountaineering Ireland mandated minimum of 2 candidates per course. Should this not be reached I will cancel the course and Eventbrite will process a full refund. Cancellations by candidates-please get in touch with me. I appreciate things come up and plans change so refunds will be accepted up to 7 days before the course starts but these will be less the Eventbrite fee (roughly £11 at the moment).
