Organize and deliver a one-day ‘Introduction to handheld GPS’ for hillwalkers and fieldworkers. This includes a map and compass revision followed by setting up a GPS unit for use in the UK, Europe and elsewhere. Digital maps are examined and discussed, and tracks, waypoints, and routes are used in the field. GPS software is examined, geocaches are sought and geophotography is demonstrated.

Mountain marathons – KIMM.
KIMM 20-year club, with trusty partners, 1985 to 2005.
You knew at some KIMMs that you were in for a tough and exciting weekend just by looking at the map in the start lane. Take Galloway 1996 for example: The range of the Awful Hand, Murder Hole, Bog of the Gairy, Martyr’s Tomb, Rig of the Jarkness, Hawk’s Nest, Nick of the Dungeon, Rig of the Gloon, Black Garpel, Scars of Gaharn, Punch Well Brae, Black Loch, Doon, Nieve of the Spit, Howe of the Caldron, Memorial (several). These foreboding places mixed with the possibly brighter Silver Flow, Clint of the Rowantree, Nick of the Curleywee, Spear of the Merrick, Point of the Snibe and Big Meowl. Tough, wet and windy it was too, unforgettably etched along with other KIMMs on the timeline of a runner’s memory.
1. 1985 - Langdale, Lake District, Cumbria.
Score class on our first KIMM after orienteering in North Wales for many years. A great experience with John Fazey, he spent a lot of the weekend pointing out various quirks in my running which I had no idea about.
2. 1986 - Galloway Hills, Scotland.
It rained on the drive up, most of Saturday and most of Sunday. Rivers in spate, some uncrossable, woke up with tent in new lake. This one with Pete, a fellow student (much faster) made me realise that fast, rough running was something that really had to be worked at. He dragged me round into 13th place on Score.
3. 1987 - Ffestiniog, Snowdonia, North Wales.
Home territory, Score with Pete again, starting from Dolwyddelan and visiting some wild areas in the Moelwyns. Fantastic warm, sunny evening at the overnight camp. Loads of points, 585, but not so high in the rankings.
4. 1988 - Cheviots, North East England.
Lovely area, but Dave N hadn’t told me the full story about his unpredictable heart! Spent quite a lot of time admiring the view while his tachycardias settled down now and then. Some staggeringly deep and rough heather.
5. 1989 - Howgills, North Pennines.
Andy’s first KIMM; he had never seen fell shoes and had a pair delivered by motorcycle courier as he left London on the Friday afternoon. Memorable drive to the start in his Audi Quattro. This was that classic weekend with fast running on short grass with steep hills on the Saturday, followed by a slow trudge through the rain and deep peat on the Sunday. Andy was very impressed by the Walsh grip on steep, wet grass. 25th in Score.
6. 1990 - Glen Lyon (North) Scotland.
Memories of the remote beauty of the Rannoch hills. Score event with Andy again.
7. 1991 - Arrochar Alps.
Heard tales of how bad the midges could be here in mid-summer; thank goodness it was October. Score class with Andy.
8. 1993 - Upper Nithsdale & Queensberry Hills, Scotland.
Spectacular castle and estate. Warm, dry autumn days with slanting sun and golden leaves. Fast running on SS marred by painful hip, but dragged through by sheer effort from Andy.
9. 1994 - St. Mary’s Loch & Manor Valley.
Possibly best Friday night B&B in hotel with French windows looking across to Registration tent about 50 yards away. A nice pint or two watching late arrivals, followed by a cooked breakfast watching early starters. Long Score with Andy.
10. 1995 - Brecon Beacons National Park, South Wales.
This one was a week later than usual, due to sheep gathering by the graziers. Unusually, the Beacons were crisp and dry after a very hot summer. Lovely sunny autumn days with a clear sky and an overnight frost that froze all the water. A couple of rockets went up from our camp as it was Guy Fawkes’ weekend. Long Score with Dave.
11. 1996 - Galloway Forest Park & Hills, Scotland.
I think we started this one after several pints of ‘Heavy’ and a fish supper in Newton Stuart. Long Score with Martin; weather much better than the Galloway floods in 1986.
12. 1997 - Kielder Forest, North East England.
Remember thinking that it was amazing that trees could grow on such rough, tussocky land. A mix of fast forest tracks and very slow cross-country. Long Score, but haven’t a clue who with!
13. 1998 - Howgills North Pennines.
This was the windiest! Almost comical memories of runners chasing flying maps across the hillsides. Several times a map flew past at 50mph, snatched from some distant hand. 16th Vets on Long Score with Ross; pretty good on his painful ankle.
14. 1999 - Cowal Peninsula Argyll, Scotland.
Exciting drive up with a ferry crossing to Dunoon and Friday night in an old castle with huge trees. The rumour that there were no paths or tracks was true. Timed-out on Elite day 2 with Ross.
15. 2000 - Lake District, Cumbria.
Black Coombe right out on the SW corner of the Lakes. Good weather for long, fast days on the A with Dave W, finishing 20th and 6th Vets.
16. 2001 - Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, Scotland.
Lovely meal with a gang of Eryri on Friday evening in the marina at Largs. Long, fast day one on the A with Dave W. A memorable leg between two controls on the Sunday that covered almost the entire diagonal of the map. A prize at last; 8th and 2nd Vets!
2002 - EuroKIMM, Valmeinier, Maurienne, France.
Great event; wonderful hospitality; staggering scenery. Day one heading south towards the Grand Galibier in warm sun. Overnight camp at a French alpine army camp with huge fire, local wine and cheese. Misty start to day two over high passes with a fast finish through alpine meadows. Another prize with Dave W for 8th and 3rd Vets! Photo of us running one of the ridges in Le Dauphiné local paper.
17. 2002 - Cheviot, North East England.
Lovely day one on the Elite with Dave W in warm autumn sun; good progress in spite of losing the ‘dibber’ somewhere between 3 and 4. Foul, cold, wet and windy on the tops on day two. Glad to get back to the hot soup.
18. 2003 - Langholme Scottish Borders.
Remember this one crossing some of the roughest moors. Some sheep, but no sheep tracks. We could see the control, but it was 5k away through chest-high heather. Taxing A with Dave W.
19. 2004 - Brecon Beacons, South Wales.
Great weather, good route choices and long days on the A with Mike. Surprising remoteness for a relatively roaded area; 10th Vets.
20. 2005 - Eastern Lake District, Ullswater, Cumbria.
Long, fast day one on the Lowther hills, skirting RSPB Eagle wardens. Tough day two on the A again with Mike; 8th Vets.
2006. Snowdonia (road) Marathon.
