“The aim is to pre-acclimatise some of our expedition team members to 4300m using regular exposure within our state of the art Environmental Laboratory Facility (ELF) which can create conditions of extreme altitude, cold (-20 degrees C) and heat (+40 degrees C). This process of pre-acclimatisation is known as intermittent hypoxia and although laboratory results suggest such training improves exercise performance and reduces symptoms of AMS, there has to date been no research that follows training in the laboratory through to a high altitude expedition. During the subsequent expedition to Mera Peak (6476m), physical performance, prevalence of mountain sickness and general well-being will be assessed within the team.” Amanda Siems
