Machu Picchu via Salkantay Pass (4600m). The trek part of a month long charity work scheme with Camps International. 28 16-18 year olds, two teachers. Main guide company was Salkantay Trekking. Started at Soraypampa (3900m).
Day 1: 14km
Day 2: 25km, descend into the jungle
Day 3: 16km to camp at Llactapampa, overlooking Machu Picchu massif.
Day 4: 25km to Puentas Ruinas via Hidroelectrica.
Day 5: Puentas Ruinas to Machu Picchu, 2km, 800m ascent in 55 minutes, 3am start to reach the front of the queue!
The trek was in week 2. We had spent week 1 camping (5 nights) and working at 3700m above Urubamba. Week 3 started with a 1 night camp in Urubamba, followed by more project work on the shore of Lake Titicaca (3800m). Week 4 was bunk accommodation in Madrigal, at the start of the Colca Canyon (3100m).
