DESCRIPTION OF ROUTE:
Paddy Buckley Round Expedtion Day 1
The van was parked in capel curig opposite the bridge which leads up onto moel siabod. I left the van just after 9am. I reached the summit of moel siabod at 11am following the path then heading up the north east ridge. Heading east I started following the route across the Moelwyns to Allt-Fawr passing (clogwyn Bwlch-Y-Mean, Carnedd Y Cribau, Moel Meirch, Ysgafell Wen and Moel Druman), There where a couple of spot heights that where on the route. Navagiton was helped with a fence that ran along this section. Weather was great all week with clear skies and sunshine but wind speeds between 40-50mph kept me on my toes and would often effect progress. The hardest aspect of the day was that the area is very boggy and heavy rain over the few days before lead to route finding issues. I arrived at the summit of Allt-Fawr at 3pm and then headed SW to my campsite on the edge of Llyn Clogwyn-brith. When I arrived at camp I set up the tent and sorted my kit just leaving the essentials in my pack. I left the camp just before 4 and headed south down through the quarry and took a direct line up to Foel Ddu and then onto the summit of Moel-Yr-Hydd. I couldn’t of asked for a better day and from here with an afternoon autumn sun there was a beautiful orange glow across mid wales with Cadris Idris in clear Sight. I continued SW to the summit of Moelwyn Mawr and left my pack at the summit and wandered over to Moelwyn Bach via Craifysgafn. I then retraced my steps to collect my bag and then returned back to camp arriving at my tent 18:30.
Area :
Moelwynion
The Moelwynion (a Welsh plural, sometimes anglicised to Moelwyns) are a group of mountains in central Snowdonia. They extend from the north-east of Porthmadog to Moel Siabod, the highest of the group. The name derives from the names of the two largest mountains in the group, Moelwyn Mawr (great white hill) and Moelwyn Bach (little white hill).
