DESCRIPTION OF ROUTE
We parked the van at gatesgarth farm and walked up the northwest ridge of fleetwith pike to the summit. From the summit we walked across to grey knots and then onto brandreth. We then visited the Warnscale Bothy before walking over to haystacks. We then decided to head west to red pike via highcrag and grey crag. The afternoon bought sunshine and great views on either side into buttermere and ennerdale. When we reached red pike we dropped off north to bleaberry tarn and then followed a track, which lead through the forest and to the top edge of buttermere lake. We then followed the path, which ran along the south side back to the car.
Area :
Western Fells
The Western Fells form the southern wall of the Buttermere valley and the northern fence of Wasdale. Between the two lies Ennerdale so that in effect the group is the shape of a single horseshoe, each branch about 10 miles in length.
At the head of Ennerdale stands Great Gable. The southern arc of the group travels due west from Great Gable, the main ridge consisting of Kirk Fell, Pillar, Scoat Fell, Haycock and Caw Fell.
