Description

Poor visibility and weather deteriorating gradually during the outing. Map & compass navigation most of the way to 900m contour line on southern rib of Beinn a` Chaorainn. At that point I had to turn back due to gale force winds and visibility down to merely 10m.
I started at layby on the A86 to Newtonmore, grid ref 401 819. Followed east bank of Allt na h-Uamha to 402 825, where I crossed stream and continued on forestry track on the opposite bank. Continued on forestry tracks to 828 400. From here map+compass to Meall Bhaideanach (606m), then NW to 630m knoll and finally onto main south rib of Beinn a` Chaorainn. Tough going on deep dry heath. As mentioned before, at 900m I turned back to the weather deteriorating considerably.

Area : Creag Meagaidh (Loch Lochy To Loch Laggan)

This area includes the famous Creag Meagaidh Range and surrounding peaks of at least 600m. It stretches east of the A82 between Spean Bridge and Invergarry, and north of the A86 as far east as Stob Coire Dubh. There are a large number of impressive winter climbs in Coire Ardair and endless navigation opportunities on and around the high central plateau of Creag Meagaidh itself. The mountains to the north and east of this range are under East Highlands, Monaliadth Mountains.
