Description

I organised a group walk to Sgiath Chuil and Meall Glas, just east of Crianlarich. The weather forecast was for light rain in the morning and heavy rain showers in the afternoon. I had walked to the bealach between the two mountains before, but had not climbed to the summits. I based my walk on the route described on the WalkHighlands website, but I changed the route to go further north for about a kilometre from the summit of Sgiath Chuil, to avoid a notoriously steep descent. This seemed to work well, and from there we took a more direct ascent to the summit of Beinn Cheathaich, following a group member who had climbed these mountains before. We were all happy with this.
Shortly before we reached the summit the rain started to come down quite heavily and visibility became very poor. After we reached the summit of Meall Glas, the man who had climbed the mountains before started to lead us directly down the south east side of the mountain. This took us close to some rocks, which made one group member quite nervous. We therefore decided to walk back up towards the summit. Someone found a path, and started leading people along it, but I could see that it was going in the wrong direction. I had to be quite firm in checking the route with my map and compass and heading that way. Luckily everyone followed me, and we soon got down out of the fog and could clearly see the way back. We got back in good time.

Area : Inveraray to Crianlarich (Ben Lui)

From the Arrochar Alps to Ben Lui, this area is home to nine Munros. Half of the peaks in the area are within the boundaries of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, while the others lie to the west. The three summits of The Cobbler (884m) contain some of the best climbing in the Southern Highlands while Ben Lui in winter looks positively Alpine. Access is relatively straightforward from the A83, A82 or A85.
