Top up your logbook day 5.
Walked with Kevin, Sarah and Tom.
Used Harvey's 1:40.
Planned to do micro navigation in the morning, followed by a refresher of rope work in the afternoon.
Micro navigation (see GPS, although forgot to start, actual start is same as finish, time-3hrs):
- chose points on map and each had to find where it was on the ground.
- found 1:40 000 not close enough scale on occasion for boundaries as they are not all marked
- struggled to find where path led around base of crag at Side Pike, but found crag symbol was overlaid on red spots of path
- found points with relative ease, all off slightly on one point by 10-15m
- coming down along path from Side Pike, thought about how to manage group through steep ground especially as it was getting wetter and potentially greasier
Returned to van for lunch and to pick up helmets and rope.
Rope work on steep ground (Stickle Ghyll, just above bridge using rocks on left over stile, time-1hr):
- looked and discussed anchor rocks
- set up belay with A-B-C in line, making sure rope didn't unzip belayer as climber became level (climber ascends on dead end side)
- discussed having considerably heavier individuals in the group and ways of safely managing them on steep ground when using a rope
One of the people that we belayed was partially sighted which added an extra dimension of complexity to the exercise.
Saw 2 tornados on way down from Side Pike.
Area :
Central Fells
The Vale of Keswick, provides separation from the Northern Fells whilst to the west runs the long valley of Borrowdale. The parallel eastern boundary is created by Thirlmere and the St Johns in the Vale. Grasmere to Windermere forms the remainder of the eastern boundary. In the west, Stake Pass descends into Great Langdale.
