Description

Climbed Central Gully in Coire an Snechda with Ben McAllister.
4 pitches. I led. Variety of anchors: 2 sling on spike, one direct on spike and finally a full-on bollard and bucket seat.
Came down the Goat Track and traversed over to Mess of Pottage area and went through WML rope work:
- boot axe (NB half axe shaft inserted vertically, boot against shaft with alignment through ankle bone/shin, uphill hand stays on top of axe, lower hand control rope, strong stance. Only good in descent. Better than stomper if high winds as lower, more stable body position)
- stomper (NB axe shaft vertical, fully inserted, krab round shaft with narrow end facing out (for rope to run through), brace heels with snow pack, rope under one arm, round back of neck, and twist on other forearm)
- bucket with buried axe (NB dig bucket first, from bucket, score horizontal line at full extension and vertical line - making sure of correct fall-line alignment. Dig vertical slot, smooth front face, extra twist on clove hitch round back of axe to centre the knot, sling in groove down fall line to bucket. If necessary, tie isolation knot in sling and `tie-in` to system using rope clove hitched onto krab. NB rope should be stacked oppo side from where client approaches from)
- bucket with bollard (NB bucket first and check alignment on bollard. Score with axe, sizing according to snow condition. Support at shoulders if 2 x axe or pole, or at head of 1 x axe/pole. Bed rope in and do saw test. `Tie-in` using rope/krab/clovehitch)

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
