Description

This walk was part of a long weekend in Torridon that I put on for my Meetup group. I had recced all the walks a month earlier, to make sure that I was fit enough to do three big walks in three days. It was a very hot day, and there were 13 of us. I did the route from the most westerly car park, approaching round Loch Coire Mhic Fhearchair, and I tried to go quite slowly, as it was a very hot day and many people were struggling in the heat. There were also a lot of clegs on the attack. We took a lengthy lunch break at Loch Coire Mhic Fhearchair, and me and another woman went in for a swim. One man unfortunately had a bad cold, and in retrospect it might have been better for him if he'd gone back home. Most of the others were fine with the scrambly bits, but there was one woman who has a lot of hillwalking experience, but on easy hills, and had never done any scrambling. She needed a lot of help getting up to the ridge, but was fine after that. Another woman had a funny turn at the first summit, due to the heat, but she felt better after having something to eat. At the approach to the second summit, there were three very slow people, including the ill man, who decided not to do that summit. I waited a long time for these three people to catch up, while the others went to the summit. The woman who had never scrambled before was terrified about getting to the summit because it was steep and narrow, and me and another woman coaxed her to the top very gently. She was really pleased to have made it. However she had a very difficult time on the very steep part of the descent, partly because the soles of her shoes weren't very grippy, so she slipped and fell a few times. Me and the other woman took a long time walking down with her. Meanwhile the people I'd offered a lift to were waiting in the car park getting tortured by the clegs and midges.

Area : Cuillin and Torridon (Liathach)

This area is on the west coast of Scotland and its most well-known mountains are probably Beinn Eighe (1010m) and Liathach (1055m). The area is bordered by Loch Maree and the A832 to the north and Glen Carron and the A890 to the south. It should not to be confused with The Cuillin which is on Skye and listed in the Western Isles region. The mountains list contains all peaks above 800m.
