Description

The second day of our Torridon weekend, eight of us climbed Slioch. As we started to ascend after the long walk-in, the heat became intense, so we took several breaks and drank lots of water. I was unable to change the time schedule of the walk, as we'd arranged to meet other people at the start. When we reached the lochan at 600m, the weather suddenly became so chilly and breezy that we all had to put on our jackets! After eating lunch, we climbed up to the summit plateau. Unfortunately low cloud rolled in, and we got no views. After getting to the summit, the low cloud turned into a white-out, and we wandered off course slightly, following the wrong path and going too far south. We hadn't really paying attention, and once we realised our mistake it took us about five or ten minutes to get back on the right track towards Sgurr an Tuill Bhain. We all enjoyed the ridge walk, and we got back down the mountain in reasonably good time.

Area : Loch Maree to Loch Broom and The Fannaichs

This area contains four main sub-regions: An Teallach, The Fannaichs, Kinlochewe & Letterewe. The highest Munro is Sgurr Mor, part of The Fannaichs range, at a height of 1110m. The impressive Slioch (981m), although not the tallest, is described by the SMC Munros Guide as being ‘one of the great sights of the Northern Highlands’ and well worth a visit. This area sits to the north of the A832 and is almost completely devoid of human habitation.
