Description

I camped in the car park at Glen Etive the night before this walk, so I could get an early start. The reason I camped in the car park was that it was dark by the time I arrived, at 9pm, so I couldn't see to find an alternative pitch.
I set off the next morning at 7.40am, alone, and climbed up the shoulder at a fairly steady pace, pausing occasionally to enjoy the views. When the summit peak came into view, I have to say I found it quite unnerving, even though I love scrambling and generally have a good head for heights. The rocks looked unstable, which was probably a bit of an illusion, but that combined with the steep drops on either side gave me a bit of vertigo.
At the mountain's southern peak I kept walking on in the wrong direction for a minute or two, luckily noticing and quickly getting back on the right track. I stopped for lunch at the Bealach Lochain Ghaineamhaich, but after 10 minutes a squally rain shower came in, so I pressed on towards Beinn nan Aighenan. I found the climb up it much easier than I'd expected, and the views were spectacular. I was hit by several squally hailstorms on the way down. I took a rest on the way down from the bealach, but by the end of the long walk out I was slipping and sliding in the bog with tiredness. However I very much enjoyed my day, especially the walk up Beinn nan Aighenan.

Area : Glen Etive to Glen Lochy

This is the area south of Buachaille Etive Mor as far as the A85 (Tyndrum to Oban road). It includes the peaks around the Glencoe Ski Centre (Creise and Meall a’Bhuiridh) alongside eleven other Munros and many other peaks above 600m. Highlights such as Ben Cruachan (1126m) and Stob Ghabhar (1090) remind all-comers that this is an area of high mountains and low glens.
