Description

Cycle 8.5km + 105m, walk 19.3km + 1150m, cycle 8.5km + 100m.
Slept overnight in the van at the road end by the white gates GR545689. Cold in the morning so had a bit of a lie in and waited for daylight to set off on the bike (07.50), arriving at Corravachie (08.40) just beyond Wyvis Lodge in good time despite some stops for pictures of the red sunrise. Followed the new track (for the micro hydro) to the intake on the Allt Corravachie, where I crossed and struck east to the top of the fencing GR484723. Eventually joined the Argocat track onto Fiaclach and Meall nan Bradan Leathan (11.00), one of the two deleted summits which were my quarry. On to Glas Leathad Beag (11.15) and its west top, before following the plateau ridge round to Bealach Tom a'Choinnich where I met my first people who had come up from the west side. The long pull up Glas Leathad Mòr for a bite to eat (12.30) and yet more walkers, before heading over to An t-Socach, my second deleted summit. A return to the bealach and gentler pull up to Tom a'Choinnich was very pleasant, as was the zig-zag stalkers path down to Carn Gorm. The path continued its devious way through large boulder fields before reaching heathery slopes taking me down to the track at GR458733, which took me back to Corravachie and the bike (15.50) and a cycle back down the track to the van (16.40), finishing in the dark and sleet. After a change of garb I then undertook the long drive home. Snow above 700m.

Area : Loch Broom to Easter Ross

North and east of the A835 is the area from Loch Broom to Easter Ross. This road is also the main access point for walking and climbing in the area which contains seven Munros, the highest being Beinn Dearg (1084m). The Ben Wyvis ridge stretches from southwest to northeast from the road towards Loch Glass. Mountains south of Ben Wyvis are in the Glen Cannich to Glen Carron area, whilst those to the west are in the Loch Maree to Loch Broom area.
