Description

Decided to climb Beinn Chabhair with a friend. We initially set off on the wrong path, against my better judgement, having met a couple of walkers who seemed to know what they were doing and were walking very fast. When I queried the route, they insisted they were going the right way, and by the time I realised it was the wrong way (at about 250m altitude) they were way ahead of us. We managed to find our way back almost to where we should have been, by using my map, compass and the GPS locator app on my phone. We had to walk upstream along the river until we could find a safe place to cross. From then on, the walk was quite straightforward, although there was quite a bit of snow and the weather was quite cloudy. The snow was soft and fresh so there was no need for crampons, although heavier winter boots would have helped me - I was slipping a lot. As we got near the summit, the clouds began to clear and we were treated to the sight of a fog bow and a Brocken Spectre. The day turned out to be quite magical.
The main learning for me was to trust my own judgement and not to be afraid to slow down and get my map out, even when I`m with people who really seem to know what they`re doing.

Area : Loch Lomond to Strathyre (Ben More)

Ben Lomond (974m) and Ben More (1174m) sit on opposite sides of this area which stretches from Loch Lomond to the western end of Loch Earn. There are two distinct sections, to the north and south of Glen Voil, with the remaining peaks sitting to the south of Loch Katrine. Access to the majority of the hills in this area is commonly from Crianlarich, Aberfoyle or Callander.
