A trek through the East African Rift Valley in Ngorongoro area of Tanzania.
Day 1 a short walk up to the Olmoti crater. The walk down into Emapakaai crater had to be postponed as one of the 4x4 vehicles became stuck in the mud on the track up to Olmoti.
Day2 a much longer day starting with a decent into the Empakaai Crater and climb back out before trekking down to the Masai village of Naiyobi. From Naiyobi we trekked up into the Acacia forest. Great views across to Oldonyo Lengai the active volcano in this region. (9 hours)
Day 3 Acacia Camp to Alalarai Camp. A 45 minute walk down a dry vally then 3 steep climbs. Great views across to Lake Natron and the grass lands that leads to the Serengeti. (6 hours)
Day 4 Rift Valley escarpment to Lake Natron. An undulating start leading to a steep and sketchy descent that leads to grass lands running up to the alkine Lake Natron. the route is very exposed and hot so an early start was necessary.
Day 5 Walk out to Lake Natron and the local village of Ngaresero. Easy but hot walking on the flats out to Lake Natron and back through the Masai village. This was followed by a short transfer to a local gorge for some wet gorge walking up to some spectacular falls.
