Description

Angela, Bill and I decided to go for the remote Beinn Dearg. The shower of rain came to nothing and we were more lightly dressed and peched all the way up the glen and up the steep slope onto Stuic na Cabhaig before the rain came on. We were well pleased with our hill, a broad flat-topped curving ridge, with some rockier peaks in the central portion, enclosing a surprisingly large corrie lochan.
Several times, despite the rain which came on for a while, I exclaimed how fine this mountain was, and wondered aloud why it had taken me 30 years of visits to Torridon to get round to climbing it. We even took in the eastern most peak, Sgurr na Feola. Although it was clagged in at first, we did get views of Beinn Eighe and the approach to Coire Mhic Fhearchair. We retraced our steps to the previous col before making a long traversing descent to a rock-cut platform which I described as a piedmont feature. Then on to the path for the long trudge out to the road. The path has not been maintained recently, all the water bars are near to overflowing.
After debating how we were going to get back to Torridon, we decided to hitch. Angela was going to go first, but I happened to be on the road a minute before the others and stuck my thumb out at a passing electrical contractor’s van which sped to a stop and took me off before the others were even at the verge!

Area : Cuillin and Torridon (Liathach)

This area is on the west coast of Scotland and its most well-known mountains are probably Beinn Eighe (1010m) and Liathach (1055m). The area is bordered by Loch Maree and the A832 to the north and Glen Carron and the A890 to the south. It should not to be confused with The Cuillin which is on Skye and listed in the Western Isles region. The mountains list contains all peaks above 800m.
