Description

A Rockhoppers MC New Years day walk, based at Crianlarich SYHA. We set out in the dark and rain, and the replanted trees up to Meall an Fhreiceadain were unpleasant but once above the snowline at about 500m everything wet froze solid pretty quickly. It was deep soft snow all along the ridge of Meall Dhamh to the main summit. The avalanche risk prevented a continuation to Stob Garbh or a descent to Coire, so the only option was the retrace our footsteps. Just before dark the clouds lifted and we were treated to a fantastic sunset whilst still descending Grey Height, but headtorches were not required as there was a full moon.

Area : Loch Lomond to Strathyre (Ben More)

Ben Lomond (974m) and Ben More (1174m) sit on opposite sides of this area which stretches from Loch Lomond to the western end of Loch Earn. There are two distinct sections, to the north and south of Glen Voil, with the remaining peaks sitting to the south of Loch Katrine. Access to the majority of the hills in this area is commonly from Crianlarich, Aberfoyle or Callander.
