Description

A Rockhopper MC trip staying at the Station Lodge, Tulloch. Following heavy snow there was a break in the storms, so a group of four decided to take the train to Corrour and traverse over Chno Dearg back to Tulloch. Trail breaking was heavy on Rannoch Moor, as drifts completely concealed the tracks and we all fell through into the bogs at some point. After passing under teh railway and beginning the climb up Sron na Garh-beinne things became more manageable. Crampons were required as we neared the final slopes of Meall Garbh. The views were stunning and only occasionally did mist roll in before clearing. The descent to the north meant avoiding the steepest slopes which were in the avalanche zone, and then a bearing was fixed on Lochan nan Caorach where we picked up the track through Fersit, and a walk back in the dark.

Area : Loch Treig to Loch Ericht (Ben Alder)

Often referred to as the Central Highlands, this area covers the mountains between Loch Treig, Loch Ericht and Loch Laggan. Access is commonly from the A86 or the Corrour Halt stop on the West Highland Railway. An impressive fourteen Munros are scattered across this area (four of which are over 1100m), and included in the mountains list are all of the peaks above 600m. Ben Alder is often thought of as one of the more remote mountains in Scotland and its vast high plateau sits in contrast to the ridge created by Beinn Bheoil. Peaks to the east of Loch Ericht are listed in the East Highlands region.
