
The Coledale Horseshoe - Lake District - North Western Fells: Grisedale Pike (791m), Hopegill Head (770m), Sand Hill (756m), Crag Hill (839m), Scar Crags (672m), Sail (773m), Outerside (568m), Barrow (455m). Walk planning included review of Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS), Met Office Mountain Weather, and The Weather Channel forecasts. The weather was sunny with temperatures from 100m to 300m around 15C, and at the summits around 8C. Light/moderate winds. Visibility very good. Great photography day. Route planning included review of OS Explorer OL4, "The English Lakes, North-Western Area" and information from "Walking the Wainwrights with Stuart Marshal" and "Lake District - 30 High Level and Fell Walks". Started from parking lot at Braithwaite/Keswick, at the Coledale Inn. Climbed west along the upper "Kimm" trail and along Sleet How to Grisedale Pike. Continued to Hopegill Head along Hobcarton Crag. Turned south over Sand Hill to Coledale Hause, and up to Crag Hill, the highest summit of the walk. At Crag Hill, turned east along Scar Crags to Sail. Continued down to High Moss (very wet standing water underfoot from previous day's rain) to ascend to Outerside. Then to Style End, and up to the summit of Barrow, where I descended to Braithwaite Lodge, and across Braithwaite to the parking lot at Coledale Inn. Time: 6 hours 10 minutes; Distance: 10.7 Miles; Elevation Gain: 4,409 ft/Loss: 4,377.
