
MTA Hill Skills training - Day 2 - Beyond the Edge: Edale/Kinder Plateau/Kinder Low Trig Point

Planned a walk from Edale Town Hall Parking lot onto Kinder Plateau via Grindsbrook Clough. Conducted some off track exploration and navigation to contour locations at Fox Holes, Then on to Crowden Tower, to Wool Packs, Pym Chair, Edale Head, Then again went off trail to navigate on a bearing to Edale Head (rock formation) from Noe Stool, and then took a bearing to Kinder Low and navigating off trail on that bearing to the Trig Point at Kinder Low. Back down to Edale Rocks, Swine Back, Jacobs Ladder, Barber Booth, and Edale village, ending at Old Nags Head pub.
Used map skills of taking bearings from the map to the ground, and compass skills by taking a bearing and bringing that to the map. Used transection by taking a bearing from a natural feature (a clough with water source) to a point on a linear feature to identify specific location. Took bearings from the map to navigate to several geographic locations based on reading contour lines. Also discussed gear for walking, first aide, emergency response, Crow Act 2000, Access Land, rights, MTA/BMC, Tree identification, Bird Identification, and ecology. Also walking skills, foot placement and balance.

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
