Two days exploring the prehistoric archaeology above Eskdale. From Fisherground campsite I climbed via Blea Tarn to Brat's Hill stone circles, then over Boat How looking for possible settlement sites. Traversing above Whillan Beck a camp was made above Stony Tarn. The following day I crossed to the south side of Eskdale and climbed up to Ulpha Fell, initially using the old shepherd's track under Kepple Crag to Green Crag. It was then pathless over the moor to Birkerthwaite via Great Crag, before exploring the prehistoric settlements, field clearance cairns and burial barrows around Devoke Water, before heading into pathless Brantake Moss to camp. The sheep were noisy and late to bed, only to be unsettled by a low flying Hercules at 1am! The next day's descent was down the shepherd's track to the Esk and on to my return train at Ravenglass.
Area :
Southern Fells (Scafell Pike)
The Southern Fells Include Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, occupy a broad area to the south of Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. High and rocky towards the centre of the Lake District, the Southern Fells progressively take on a moorland character toward the south west. In the south east are the well known Furness Fells, their heavily quarried flanks rising above Coniston Water.
