Walk out from Harrowbarrow, a small village near the head of the Tamar River with great views down towards the coast. In bygone years the village would have been a hub for copper and tin mining. Today, remnants of this rich history can be found in the many ruined kiln towers and associated mining buildings which litter the periphery of the village.
On leaving Harrowbarrow we headed north to the small village of Latchley before heading east to walk through a wooded area, along the picturesque Tamar River. On reaching the outskirts of Downgate, we headed south up onto the top of Kit Hill where we watched an approaching fog bank approaching, swallowing up the fine view that would normally be had from this spot.
Kit Hill Country Park is the highest point in the local area, reaching 334 metres in height and covering around 400 acres (152 hectares). On a good day, there are fantastic views of the Tamar Valley, reaching all the way down to the coast. As with much of the surrounding area, the park has a rich history in tin, silver, copper and tungsten mining. After a brief stop for a cup of tea, we headed south, out of the park and back to Harrowbarrow.
Weather, low teens, dropping off to mid single figures once the rain and wind set in.
Conditions underfoot, incredibly wet and muddy.
