A Rockhoppers MC trip based at Newtonmore. I had never visited Creag Meagaidh and the day looked to be the best forecast of the trip. Three others chose to join me and I initially proposed the circuit to Creag Meagaidh including Carn Liath, Stob POite Coire Ardair and Puist Coire Ardair and Sron a'Choire from Aberarder Farm. However upon reaching the ridge at Carn Liath we discovered the winds above 1000m were over 50mph and gusting at over 60mph, higher than forecast. We decided to see how far we could get, with the Window now our proposed descent. We could see a steep banked up snow slope where the ridge narrows at Coire a'Chriochairen, so scouted the slopes of the Coire below as a potential descent. However the steep snow was somewaht sheltered and easily ascended without crampons. Stob Poite Coire Ardair was reached but the gusts made walking upright impossible. The window was a mixture of soft and icy snow requiring crampons and axe. The scenery in Coire Ardair stunning.
Area :
Creag Meagaidh Loch Lochy To Loch Laggan)
This area includes the famous Creag Meagaidh Range and surrounding peaks of at least 600m. It stretches east of the A82 between Spean Bridge and Invergarry, and north of the A86 as far east as Stob Coire Dubh. There are a large number of impressive winter climbs in Coire Ardair and endless navigation opportunities on and around the high central plateau of Creag Meagaidh itself. The mountains to the north and east of this range are under East Highlands, Monaliadth Mountains.
