This area is situated on the north-western tip of Scotland and contains 4 Munros (from biggest to smallest); Ben More Assynt (998m), Conival (987m), Ben Klibreck (962m) and Ben Hope (927m). Also included in the mountains list are all of the peaks above 700m. The southern boundary is the road which joins Ullapool to Lairg and then to the A9.
An Inverness MC meet to Elphin. A large group took the stalker's path from Knockin Crag and the East Ridge. The snow was deep and soft and only small patches of hard snow were found higher up. By the time of the descent a strong thaw was setting in: whilst the others returned the way they had come, I suspected the descent via the bealach and the choire to the south would be more straight forward in these conditions, and led a winter novice down. This did indeed prove a much easier route and we were back at the cars half an hour before the others.
