Description

A research trip to a new area exploring the archaeology and hills of Caithness. Leaving the train at Helmsdale I followed the coast to Berriedale. The path here forms the John O'Groats Way but is currently not very frequented and rather overgrown. Heading inland I camped by Berriedale Water. Morven is more usually climbed from Braemore Lodge, but I first traversed the three peaks of Scaraben and then camped not far from an old homestead and ancient "wag" (ailsed house) to the south of Morvern making the ascent in the early evening. It is horrendously steep from whichever side you make the climb but this way was follwed a faint gully and corrie which minimised the exposure and avoided the scree. I headed west to Loch Scalabsdale as I wanted to visit some more "wags" near the place called Wag. Creag Scalabsdale was climbed via its Loch: the descent south was horrendously steep with a big pack. The Craggan Burn followed to Kilphedir. A camp was made not far from the ancient farmstead Caen, and visits to Brochs, burial cairns and a souterain were made. An excellent area with great potential for exploring. I met more adders than people!
