Description

I met up with a couple of friends for a week long exploting Fisherfield and the area north of Loch Maree. As the bus from Inverness to Poolewe only arrives early evening I camped in the forest above Kernsary and met them in the morning. We walked in via Fionn Loch and followed the old stalker's path to Gorm Loch Mor where we established a base camp. The first day we explored Beinn Tharsuinn Chaol, which showed no signs of ever being visited. The day was a micture of clear skies and mist. We ended up on Beinn Mheinnidh and returned to camp via the north shore of Lochan Fada and a spiralling traverse of meallan nan Gobhar. We returned to this pass the following day before traversing round into Coire an Fhraoich. From Bealach Odhar we climbed the subsidiary peak Meall Garbh and then Beinn Tarsuinn itself. This was done in mist. We encountered soft snow but the final thaw of winter was well and truly setting in. Our axes and crampons were not required. We returned via the Suidheachan Fhinn ridge and the pass above camp. Our final full day climbed A' Mhaighdean via the ridge above our camp. Although we were in mist this began to clear just after the summit and we headed to Ruadh Stac Mor. Instead of ascending via the Munroist's path which is horribly eroded we tackled the heathery slopes 500m to the north. The descent, now in sunshine, was via Lochan a Bhraghad, Fuar Loch Mor and Fuar Loch Beag. This was steep and trackless but we could then traverse round to th old stalker's path and back to camp. The walk-out on the final day was a reverse of our walk in back to Poolewe.

Area : Loch Maree to Loch Broom and The Fannaichs

This area contains four main sub-regions: An Teallach, The Fannaichs, Kinlochewe & Letterewe. The highest Munro is Sgurr Mor, part of The Fannaichs range, at a height of 1110m. The impressive Slioch (981m), although not the tallest, is described by the SMC Munros Guide as being ‘one of the great sights of the Northern Highlands’ and well worth a visit. This area sits to the north of the A832 and is almost completely devoid of human habitation.
