ROUTE: Traverse of Liathach East to West
MEMBERS OF PARTY: With friend Tim Simons
CONDITIONS: Perfect Spring conditions. Remnants of snow on summits and in gullies. Dry rock on the pinnacles.
DURATION: About 7 and a half hours tent to tent
SKILLS PRACTISED: Campcraft. Navigation with map and terrain in good visibility. Detailed route-finding on narrow exposed ridges, easy scrambling.
MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT: I was blown away by the mountain scenery. Unlike anything else in Scotland. Still my favourite part of the Highlands.
KEY LEARNING POINTS/CONTRIBUTION TO EXPERIENCE: A revelation - marked the beginning of my obsession with mountains. The first day of a week's camping trip to Torridon.
Area :
Cuillin and Torridon (Liathach)
This area is on the west coast of Scotland and its most well-known mountains are probably Beinn Eighe (1010m) and Liathach (1055m). The area is bordered by Loch Maree and the A832 to the north and Glen Carron and the A890 to the south. It should not to be confused with The Cuillin which is on Skye and listed in the Western Isles region. The mountains list contains all peaks above 800m.
