Description

Start: Forestry Commission car park, Little Crossthwaite NY 23523 28158
Distance: 11k
Duration: 6 hours
Direction: ESE rising steeply on forest tracks then public footpath N to Carl Side 746 up shoulder; continuing NE to summit. Returning to Longside Edge NW then descending and turning S through woods to car park.
Description: Internet search of walkers routes revealed this as a good option. Entered cloud at around 700m and quite cold and windy on top. On return, came out of cloud on Longside Edge with spectacular views. Bit of a rough path but popular. Great walk, very refreshing and varied.

Area : Northern Fells

The Northern Fells occupy a circular area about 10 miles in diameter. The centre is slightly lower, an area of upland grazing and marshland known as Skiddaw Forest. This name may be misleading since the only trees form the windbreak of Skiddaw House. This isolated building, was once a shepherd's bothy. It currently serves as a youth hostel. Skiddaw Forest stands at the head of the three major rivers of the Northern Fells. The Caldew, Dash Beck and the Glenderaterra. These streams divide the circular area into three distinct sections.
